Chemicals Products - Manufacturer,
Public. Ltd. Firm Since 1832

Grace Davison history began in 1832 when William T. Davison, an Irish immigrant, founded the company in Baltimore, Maryland. The second-longest continually operating chemical company in the United States, the former Davison-Kettlewell Company has grown from "an acidulator of old bones and oyster shells" for fertilizer to one of the world's leading manufacturers of silica-based adsorbents and related products; of polyolefin catalysts used in plastics and packaging; and of fluid cracking catalysts that are used to "crack" crude oil into gasoline, jet fuel, kerosene, diesel fuel, and other petroleum products.
William T. Davison

Davison became a key part of W. R. Grace & Co. In 1954. Originally part of Grace's initial expansion into the chemical business, Grace Davison has become one of the corporation's core product lines.

Silica gel was patented in 1919 by Dr. Walter A. Patrick of Johns Hopkins University for use in the adsorption of vapors and gases in gas mask canisters during World War I. Davison first began selling silica gel in 1923 and began building its K-1 silica gel plant in Curtis Bay in 1927. However, silica gel did not receive wide acclaim until World War II, when Davison developed the silica technology to meet three compelling wartime needs: first, as a dehydrating agent to protect military equipment from moisture damage; second, as a fluid cracking catalyst for the production of high octane gasoline; and third, as a catalyst support for the manufacture of butadiene from alcohol, an integral part of the synthetic rubber program. These last two applications marked the beginning of Davison's entrance into the custom catalyst business.

Fluid cracking catalysts were an outgrowth of Davison's extensive knowledge of silica gel. Joint development of a silica gel-based fluid cracking catalyst was begun in 1938 between Davison and the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. The first commercial synthetic fluid cracking catalyst was produced in August 1942 at Davison's Curtis Bay site. Today, Davison is the world's leading producer of fluid cracking catalysts.
Grace Davison cooperated with Phillips Petroleum Company in the mid-1950's in the development of novel chrome-silica polyethylene catalysts. In 1957, Davison began commercial-scale manufacture of these catalysts for the production of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) at its Curtis Bay site. In 1968, Union Carbide introduced a new process for the production of HDPE and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) with the silica component from Grace Davison's Curtis Bay site. Today, Grace Davison polyolefin catalysts are used in manufacturing one-third of the world's catalytically produced polyethylene.
Grace Davison is Headquartered in Columbia, Maryland. Its global manufacturing and research sites are located in Curtis Bay, Maryland; Columbia, Maryland; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Lake Charles, Louisiana; Cincinnati, Ohio; Littleton, Colorado; Aiken, South Carolina; Valleyfield, Quebec; Worms, Germany; Soracaba, Brazil; and Kuantan, Malaysia.
